![]() You haven't told us much about the games you do and don't like. So you might be one of the many people that love Catan. You discover that the mechanics are thrown together in a slapdash manner, the theme is thin, and that you can go an entire game without rolling a single 9.and you realize that there are better ways to spend 90 minutes.Īll that being said, I rather adore Carcassonne and you hate it. You think, "ah this is going to be a really nice euro like El Grande, and I am going to enjoy strategizing and scheming to win for 90 minutes.and then you play it. She lures you in with her serious looking components (hey, it doesn't look like Hungry Hungry Hippos or anything). I have no problem with games that rely on a lot of luck, but they shouldn't be 90 minutes long. My beef with Catan is that asks too much from you.given how much is due to luck. If I want economic action, I would take Caylus 1303, Powergrid, Viticulture or 100 other games over Catan. If I want negotiation, I would prefer Chinatown or Bohnanza. In the gateway+ category, I would happily play Samurai, Babylonia, Ra, Cuzco, El Grande, Iwari, Concordia or Hansa Teutonica over Catan. I would much rather play any of those than Catan. Ticket to Ride, Quest for El Dorado, Azul, Carcassonne and Mission Red Planet). Is it good? Depends on your other options. But finding the same mix of all of those elements together is I'd say a harder task, and it's a great game for "being with people" as opposed to "thinking with people," which I also enjoy. Catan is by no means the heaviest game that exists, and you can find all of its elements implemented better in other games. So is Catan a game you ought to own? I think it depends on the sorts of gaming sessions you do and what interests you. But if I want to sit around with a group of friends and laugh and enjoy one anothers' company, all while also playing a "designer board game" as these are something called that does involve strategy, tactics, and some of the mechanics I enjoy, Catan is certainly not alone on that list, but it is very much ON that list. Would I pull out Catan to play with strangers at the local game shop? No. Would I want to play Catan if I were interested in an evening of deep strategy and heavy analysis? No there are other games I'd much prefer in that mood. It's especially fun because of the group dynamics that seem to come out in these games, and that's my number one reason for playing it. ![]() I'm sure there are games which do that, and though I can't specifically suggest one, what I can say is that the all around mix in Catan is fun. You'll rarely see a suggestion of a single game which offers the same mix of things as Catan. ![]() These are good lists, but notice something about them: it's always "this game for that element, that game for this other element, etc." You'll often see lists that go over different elements of Catan and suggest other games that do each better - indeed there are some replies here doing exactly that. I think what is easily missed in a lot of takes on Catan is that the game has a number of different sides to it and in Catan, you get them all at once. Like many others who have commented here, I like heavier, more complex games which don't rely so much on the randomness of something like a dice role, and I like some of the specific games people have proposed as "Catan alternates" - BUT I like Catan. r/tabletopgamedesign - Designer's subreddit.r/boardgameexchange - selling/buying/trading games.Game of the Week Calendar Related Sites & Subreddits The simplest use is to bold game names in your comment and add " /u/r2d8 getinfo" at the end of the post, but this post/sub has other features identified.
